If I can do it, so can you

Eight years ago I weighed 16kg more (2.5 stones) than I do now, smoked, and wasn’t very fit at all. And then I began running. I caught the bug! Since, I’ve run races of every distance including 9 marathons (5 London) and triathlons of every distance including a full Ironman. I have also qualified as a Registered Level 3 (the highest) Personal Trainer and Certified Ironman Coach.

I have done PT since qualifying in 2012 on a part-time basis with great results. Recently I exited corporate life after 35 years to follow my dream of helping others to appreciate the benefits I have experienced from being fitter and healthier.

 Personal coaching is for everyone

Most personal trainers are knowledgeable and do a good job but they spend an hour with you and move on to the next client with no thought given to you until your next appointment. I’m afraid on the whole this does not provide a sustainable long term solution for you. Personalised Coaching means I’m thinking about you even when you’re not with me. I want to know how you’re progressing with our plan (you will be updating me with emails/texts). If you have a problem or need advice in between our meetings then I can help you. If you’re not sticking to our programme then I will know from your updates (or lack of them). Maybe we need to change the plan.

The programme will be based on your personal circumstances. We all have jobs and families that come first and your programme will be designed around these, take into account your current physical status and what you want to achieve. My role is to progress you in a safe and controlled manner by: teaching you principles and techniques; motivating and encouraging you; giving you dietary advice; being absolutely honest with you; and being there for you.

Personalised Coaching is for anyone. Any age group. The less athletic you are – the more I can improve you quickly. But whoever you are I can guarantee you improvement or your money back. It’s not rocket science it’s sports science. We now know how to make you stronger, fitter (stamina) and faster. The challenge is to do it in a way that is initially acceptable to you and further down the line enjoyable. The key is sustainable. No fad diets or celeb training. This is all about what the scientists and experts know. Everything we do together is supported by science and will have a reason which I can explain to you. Personalised Coaching is above all – educational. My goal is to motivate and educate you in the art of physical training to a level where you don’t need me anymore. You enjoy feeling fit and you’re happy to put in the work to maintain it. You may come back to me occasionally for advice or to progress to a higher level.

 An unexpected origin

OK I have to confess. I have been a Chartered Accountant for 31 years. This qualification actually paid my wages and allowed me to do what I truly love now. It is recognised as the top accountancy qualification in the world and gave me an introduction into the business world that I couldn’t have dreamed of. Don’t be dismissive, in my opinion this qualification out trumps the rest put together but has little to do with what I’m doing now.

I’m not sure at all what relevance my Economics degree from this great university has to this venture. It let me escape from my home town, Doncaster which I was pleased about at the time but which I was happy to return to twenty years later.

 Success at any age

I am a level 3 Personal Trainer registered by REPs which regulates exercise professionals in the UK. You can verify my registration on their website. This is the highest qualification awarded to a Personal Trainer in the UK. It taught me the principles of how to make your body fitter, leaner and stronger.

This qualification built on what I learned as a Personal Trainer and taught me to be athlete – or as in my case now, client – centred. Everyone has different abilities, strengths and weaknesses. Everyone has commitments and responsibilities. This qualification taught me that you are starting with a unique individual and that you have to design the programme and techniques around that individual – you can’t apply the same methods to everyone. This has been my inspiration for Personalised Coaching.
